How It Works
Fuel burn rate follows the cube law — doubling RPM increases fuel use by 8x. At wide-open throttle (WOT), a gas outboard burns roughly 1 GPH per 10 HP. Diesel engines are about 25-30% more fuel efficient. Most boaters cruise at 60-75% throttle for the best balance of speed and economy. The sweet spot for fuel efficiency is usually 3,000-3,500 RPM for most outboards.
